Appropriation of ICTs by young women living in informal slums

Grace Githaiga is currently a PhD candidate at the Institute for Development Studies (IDS), University of Nairobi, Kenya, where she is conducting research on e-participation, communication and digital inclusion, focusing on young women in informal settlements.

She is former Executive Director of EcoNews Africa, an NGO operating in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. She is President of the African Chapter of the World Association of Community Broadcasters (AMARC) and facilitates the African Media Barometer in three East African countries for the Friedrich Ebert Foundation. The Barometer is the first in-depth, comprehensive description and measurement system for national media environments in Africa.

She possesses substantive experience in communication for development. She has worked for organizations such as International Media Support and the International Institute for Environment and Development among others.
